The Big Buddha or Ming Mongkol Buddha is dedicated to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX of Thailand) in honor of his 80th birthday.
The Mingmongkol Faith 45 foundation with Suporn Wanichakul as its president was established to oversee the construction, which began in 2002. Phuket’s Big Buddha is 25.45 meters wide at its base and 45 meters high and is made of reinforced concrete casting adorned with 135 tons of white marble from Myanmar. It costed around 30 million Bahts (800 000 Euros).
There is also a smaller statue on the right side of the Big Buddha, that is 12 meters high and is constructed of 22 tons of bronze, which is dedicated to HM Queen Sirikit. It cost 8 million Bahts (200 000 Euros).
The project has been entirely funded by donations and will officially opened in 2010 with a landscaped park and museum.
